The Part of Your Composite Deck You Can't See May Be the Most Important

When homeowners start designing a new deck, it's natural to focus on what they'll see.

The color of the decking.

The railing.

The picture frame.

Lighting.

Furniture.

Those things matter—but the most important part of your deck may be the part you almost never see again after construction is complete:

the framing underneath it.

At TrueCraft Decking, we believe premium decking deserves a structure built to match.

Your Deck Boards Aren't the Structure

Composite and PVC decking have changed outdoor living.

Today's premium decking can provide decades of performance without the staining, painting, splinters, and maintenance associated with traditional wood decking.

But those boards still depend on the structure underneath them.

Your joists, beams, posts, footings, ledger connections, hardware, and blocking are responsible for supporting the entire deck.

Installing expensive decking over poor framing is like installing a new roof on a house with failing rafters.

The finished surface may look great—but the underlying problem hasn't gone anywhere.

Proper Joist Spacing Matters

Different decking products have specific installation requirements.

The distance between framing members affects how the deck surface feels when you walk across it.

Proper framing helps create a deck that feels solid underfoot rather than soft or bouncy.

It's also one reason simply replacing old wood decking with composite isn't always as straightforward as removing one board and installing another.

The existing structure needs to be evaluated for compatibility with the new material.

Blocking Makes a Difference

Blocking is installed between joists to help strengthen and stabilize the deck frame.

It's particularly important in areas such as:

  • Picture-framed borders

  • Railing posts

  • Stair connections

  • Board transitions

  • Heavy-use areas

You may never see most of that blocking after the deck is finished.

You'll feel the difference, though.

Flashing and Water Management Matter Too

Water is one of wood framing's biggest enemies.

Proper ledger flashing helps prevent water from getting behind the deck connection and into the home.

Protective joist and beam tape can also help reduce moisture exposure at vulnerable areas of the framing.

These aren't glamorous upgrades.

Nobody invites the neighbors over to admire their ledger flashing.

But these details can have a major impact on the longevity of the overall deck.

Footings Are Where It All Begins

A great deck starts below ground.

Footings support the weight of the structure and transfer that load into the soil.

They need to be properly located, sized, and installed for the conditions of the project.

Here in Central Pennsylvania, freeze-and-thaw cycles make proper footing installation especially important.

Cutting corners below ground can eventually cause movement above ground.

And once beautiful new decking and railing are installed, correcting foundation problems becomes much more difficult.

Why TrueCraft Focuses on What You Can't See

We love building decks that look great.

Custom borders, clean trim work, premium railing, and integrated lighting are some of our favorite details.

But craftsmanship isn't only about what looks good in the final pictures.

It's also:

  • Proper structural connections

  • Correct fastening

  • Solid blocking

  • Proper flashing

  • Thoughtful framing

  • Clean cuts

  • Attention to details that eventually get covered up

A homeowner may never see some of those details again.

We still know they're there.

That's the point.

Building a Deck That Lasts Starts Underneath

When comparing deck contractors, don't only ask what decking brand they're using.

Ask how they're building the structure supporting it.

A premium outdoor living space should be built from the ground up—not dressed up from the top down.

If you're planning a new deck in Central Pennsylvania, we'd be happy to show you what goes into building it correctly.

No Shortcuts. Just TrueCraft.
