Wood Decking in Central Pennsylvania

Natural wood decking brings timeless warmth and character that no manufactured product fully replicates. TrueCraft builds beautiful wood decks using pressure-treated pine, cedar, and hardwood across Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, York, and Lancaster.

The Case for Wood Decking

There's a reason wood decks have been the standard for generations: natural wood has an authentic warmth, grain variation, and texture that manufactured materials work hard to imitate. A freshly built cedar or pressure-treated deck smells like the outdoors, looks completely natural in a garden setting, and can be refinished in any stain color you choose — giving you ongoing flexibility to update the look of your outdoor space.

From a cost perspective, wood decking is the most budget-friendly option upfront — meaningfully less than composite alternatives. For homeowners on a tighter budget, or those who genuinely enjoy outdoor maintenance and value the hands-on relationship with their space, wood is an entirely reasonable choice.

Wood is also uniquely repairable. If a single board rots, gets damaged, or discolors, you can replace that board without touching the rest of the deck. Composite repairs are more complicated and can look mismatched if the original color has been discontinued.

Types of Wood We Install

Not all wood decking performs the same. TrueCraft works with several species depending on your budget, aesthetic preferences, and the intended use of the space.

Pressure-Treated Pine

Most common, best value

ACQ (alkaline copper quaternary) pressure-treated pine is the backbone of residential decking in Central PA. It's strong, widely available, and cost-effective. The treatment process forces preservatives deep into the wood fiber, protecting against rot, insects, and fungal decay. Modern ACQ treatment is safer and less corrosive than older CCA-treated lumber. Pressure-treated pine is the right call for most homeowners who want solid performance at a manageable price.

Lifespan: 10–15 years with maintenance

Maintenance: Annual cleaning; stain/seal every 1–2 years

Western Red Cedar

Natural rot resistance, beautiful grain

Cedar contains natural oils that resist moisture, insects, and fungal rot without chemical treatment. It's lighter than pressure-treated pine, has a beautiful straight grain, and that distinctive cedar aroma. Cedar's natural oils mean it accepts stain and finish extremely well — you can achieve rich, deep tones that pressure-treated pine can't match. If left unfinished, cedar weathers gracefully to a silver-gray patina that many homeowners actually prefer.

Lifespan: 15–20 years with maintenance

Maintenance: Clean annually; stain/seal every 2–3 years

Redwood

Premium natural option

Old-growth redwood is among the most naturally durable lumber species available — with natural tannins that resist rot, insects, and UV damage without treatment. Redwood availability has become limited in recent years as old-growth forests are protected, driving costs up and supply down. When we can source quality redwood, it's exceptional. More commonly we see it in custom accent applications and feature boards rather than full deck surfaces.

Lifespan: 20–25 years with maintenance

Maintenance: Clean annually; oil or seal every 2–3 years

Ipe & Tropical Hardwoods

Maximum durability, distinctive look

Ipe (pronounced "ee-pay") is an extraordinarily dense Brazilian hardwood — so hard it's difficult to drive a nail by hand, which is why it's installed with hidden fasteners and pre-drilled pilot holes. An Ipe deck can last 40+ years with minimal maintenance, naturally resists fire, insects, and moisture, and develops a beautiful silver-gray patina if left to weather naturally. The trade-offs: substantially higher cost, sourcing scrutiny (look for FSC-certified Ipe), and the need for an experienced installer.

Lifespan: 40+ years

Maintenance: Oil annually to maintain color; low-effort aging otherwise

Wood Decking in Pennsylvania's Climate: What to Expect

Honest talk: Central Pennsylvania's climate is genuinely challenging for wood decking. We want you to go in informed.

Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Central PA winters are cold enough to freeze moisture inside wood grain, and warm enough to thaw it repeatedly. Each cycle expands and contracts the wood fiber — over years, this causes checking (surface cracks), cupping (boards curling at the edges), and eventually structural rot in untreated or under-maintained lumber. Annual sealing is essential to slow this process.

Summer Humidity

Harrisburg area summers average 65–75% relative humidity — conditions that promote mold and mildew growth on untreated wood surfaces. Proper surface preparation and application of a mold-resistant deck finish each spring prevents dark staining and surface degradation.

UV Exposure

Untreated wood grays rapidly under direct sun — often within a single summer season. While weathered gray has its own appeal, it signals UV breakdown of the wood surface. A UV-blocking deck stain or oil applied annually significantly extends the life and appearance of any wood deck.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Spring: pressure wash the deck surface; inspect all boards, ledger, and footings; replace any damaged or soft boards. Early summer: apply a quality deck stain or sealant (solid or semi-transparent) after the deck has dried fully. Fall: clear debris from between boards to prevent moisture trapping over winter.

Wood vs. Composite: Making the Right Choice

We install both, and we're not going to push you toward the more expensive option if wood is genuinely the better fit for your situation. Here's how we think about it:

Choose Wood If...

  • Your budget is the primary constraint and you need the lowest upfront cost
  • You genuinely enjoy outdoor maintenance and have the time for it
  • You want to match an existing wood structure (pergola, fence, home siding)
  • You prefer the authentic feel and smell of natural lumber
  • You're building a deck you may replace or significantly change in 10 years anyway
  • You want full color flexibility — stain any shade you want, anytime

Choose Composite If...

  • You want to minimize long-term maintenance time and cost
  • You're building an investment-grade deck that improves resale value
  • You have young children or elderly family members who need a splinter-free surface
  • The deck area has significant moisture exposure (near pool, under heavy tree cover)
  • You plan to stay in the home long-term and want a 25–50 year solution
  • You want the look of wood without the annual upkeep

Not sure which is right for you? That's exactly what our free consultation is for. We'll walk through your situation honestly and recommend what makes the most sense — even if it's the less expensive option.

Our Wood Deck Projects in Central PA

TrueCraft has built pressure-treated, cedar, and hardwood decks throughout Cumberland, Dauphin, York, and Lancaster counties. From straightforward ground-level PT pine decks in Mechanicsburg to a custom cedar deck with built-in planters in the York area to an Ipe pool deck in Lancaster County — natural wood done right is a beautiful thing.

Every wood deck we build starts with proper framing — the structural foundation that determines how long the deck lasts. We use appropriate hardware (stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners that won't corrode with ACQ-treated lumber), proper joist spacing for the decking species, and we follow local building codes for footings, ledger attachment, and railing heights.
