Deck Lighting in Central PA
Central PA summer evenings last until 9 PM. The right deck lighting turns those hours into some of the best outdoor time of the year — ambiance for entertaining, safety on stairs, and a backyard that looks great from inside the house too.
Every deck lighting fixture we install is RDI brand — chosen for low-voltage reliability, consistent finishes across post caps, stair lights, and in-rail systems, and warranty support that holds up alongside our railing and privacy work.
Use Your Deck After Sunset
A deck without lighting is unusable from sunset onward — which in late spring and summer in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, York, and Lancaster means cutting your outdoor time short just as temperatures get comfortable. Deck lighting changes that.
Beyond convenience, lighting provides safety: illuminated stair risers prevent missteps, post cap lights define the deck perimeter, and pathway lighting guides guests safely across the yard. A well-lit deck also extends your home's visual presence at night — visible from the street and from inside the house.
Deck Lighting Types We Install
A complete deck lighting plan typically combines several of these types for layered light at different heights and use zones.
Post Cap Lights
Mounted on top of railing posts, post cap lights are the most common deck lighting element. Available in dozens of styles to coordinate with your railing system. LED, low-voltage, long-lasting.
Stair Riser Lights
LED strips or individual fixtures mounted into stair risers illuminate each step from below. Critical for safety on multi-level decks. Wired during stair construction — nearly invisible until lit.
Deck Board Surface Lights
Recessed LED puck lights installed flush into deck boards or between boards. Creates dramatic accent lighting, defines deck edges, and adds atmosphere. Installed during construction when boards are down.
In-Railing LED
Integrated LED lighting built into composite railing systems. The cleanest look because the fixtures are designed as part of the railing system — same finish, same profile, invisible when off.
Under-Rail & Fascia Lighting
LED strips mounted under the top rail or inside the fascia board cast a wash of light across the deck surface. Subtle, atmospheric, and very popular on contemporary designs.
String Lights
Overhead string lights hung from a pergola or posts create a warm, festive atmosphere. Not hardwired — plug-in and hang. TrueCraft can add dedicated exterior outlets during construction for clean, uncluttered string light setups.
Low Voltage vs. Line Voltage: What's the Difference?
Deck lighting uses two different voltage systems, and it's worth understanding both before finalizing your deck design.
Low Voltage (12V)
Most deck lighting fixtures — post caps, stair lights, deck board lights, in-railing LED — run on 12V low voltage. A transformer (plugged into a standard outdoor outlet) steps household current down to 12V. Low-voltage systems are safe to work around, energy-efficient, and easy to expand. TrueCraft rough-ins the wire runs inside posts and framing during construction.
Line Voltage (120V)
Standard household current is required for outdoor outlets, ceiling fans, mounted fixtures, and any appliance. Line voltage work must be done by a licensed electrician. TrueCraft coordinates with a licensed electrician during construction to rough-in outlet boxes and conduit in the framing — much cheaper than cutting into a finished deck later.
Integrated Composite Lighting Systems
Premium composite decking lines include coordinated low-voltage lighting designed to integrate with their railing and post systems. These are the cleanest option aesthetically — every fixture shares the same finish, profile, and mounting detail as the railing. Integrated systems typically include post cap lights, in-rail accent lighting, and stair riser lights. TrueCraft specifies lighting systems matched to your decking choice so the finished result looks cohesive, not assembled from parts.
Plan Lighting During Design — Not After
The best time to plan deck lighting is before a single board is installed. Adding lighting to a finished deck requires drilling through framing, running wire through inaccessible cavities, and often removing deck boards — all of which add cost and visible wire management challenges.
When lighting is planned during the design phase, TrueCraft can:
- →Run low-voltage conduit inside hollow railing posts — completely invisible when finished
- →Pre-drill stair stringers for riser light wire runs before installation
- →Position outdoor outlet boxes at transformer and appliance locations
- →Choose a transformer location that's accessible but out of sight
- →Include a lighting layout drawing so you know exactly what will be where
We include a lighting plan consultation in every new deck project — because retrofitting later costs twice as much.
