Best Pool Deck Materials for PA
Composite Decking — Recommended
Premium composite decking is TrueCraft's first recommendation for pool applications. Capped composite boards shed water rather than absorbing it, so they won't swell, rot, or develop mold growth in wet conditions. The embossed surface provides grip underfoot. Colors won't bleach or fade from UV or pool chemical splashing. Many composite lines offer pool-specific color options in lighter shades that reflect heat rather than absorbing it — keeping the surface walkable on hot summer afternoons.
Pressure-Treated Wood — Budget Option
PT pine is the most affordable pool deck option. It holds up reasonably well in wet conditions when properly maintained — but "properly maintained" means sealing or staining every 1–2 years around a pool, not every 3–5 years as on a typical deck. Pool chemicals accelerate the breakdown of wood fibers. Splinters become a real concern after 5–7 years without diligent maintenance. TrueCraft will build a PT pool deck, but we are transparent that composite delivers a better 10-year outcome for most homeowners.

Wraparound Pool Deck
The most popular option — deck material surrounds the pool on all or most sides. Maximizes usable poolside space. Can accommodate loungers, side tables, and easy access from all angles.
Elevated Deck to Pool Grade
When the pool sits lower than the house grade, a combination deck design works well: main entertaining deck at house level, staircase descending to a ground-level pool surround.
Deck + Pergola Combination
A shaded pergola section adjacent to the pool provides a respite from direct sun. Popular with families who want a shaded lounge area next to the pool activity zone.
Outdoor Shower Integration
A simple outdoor shower connection can be roughed in during pool deck construction. Much easier to add during the build than retrofitting later.
Pool Safety & Pennsylvania Code
Pennsylvania law requires that any residential swimming pool deeper than 24 inches be enclosed by a barrier — typically a 4-foot minimum height fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate. This barrier requirement does not go away when you add a deck; rather, the deck design must accommodate the barrier.

We also coordinate with your pool company if the pool and deck are being installed simultaneously, so permits and inspections are properly sequenced.
Above-Ground Pool Decks
Above-ground pools are common throughout Cumberland and Dauphin counties. One of the most cost-effective upgrades for above-ground pool owners is a custom deck surround — a platform deck at pool rim height with railing all the way around, creating the visual impression of a semi-inground pool at a fraction of the cost.
