Pergolas & Covered Decks in Central PA

Pennsylvania's four seasons shouldn't keep you off your deck. TrueCraft Decking designs and builds pergolas, pavilions, and covered deck additions that let you enjoy your outdoor space from spring mud season through the first snowfall.

Transform Your Outdoor Space Year-Round

Central Pennsylvania gets the full range of weather — humid summers pushing 90°F, rainy springs, leafy falls, and winters that drop well below freezing. A standard open deck is only comfortably usable for a fraction of the year. A pergola or covered deck changes the equation entirely.

With the right overhead structure, your deck becomes a shaded dining area on July afternoons, a rain-sheltered hangout during April showers, and a cozy spot with a space heater well into November. Homeowners in Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster regularly tell us that adding a pergola or covered roof was the single best upgrade they made to their home.

Summer

Overhead shade reduces surface temp by 10–15°F and keeps afternoon sun off your face

Spring

Pergola rafters block light rain so you can stay outside during PA's wet season

Fall

Lattice roofs reduce falling leaf accumulation; solid roofs eliminate it entirely

Winter

Add infrared heaters under a solid-roof covered deck for 3-season use

Pergola Types We Build

Not all pergolas are the same. TrueCraft builds five distinct overhead structure types, each suited to different yards, budgets, and use cases.

Attached Pergola

Bolted to your home's ledger board, an attached pergola extends directly off the house above your deck. Creates a seamless indoor-outdoor transition. Most popular choice for decks with sliding or French door access.

Freestanding Pergola

Supported entirely by its own posts, a freestanding pergola can be positioned anywhere in the yard — over a patio, beside a pool, or as a garden feature. No home attachment required.

Pavilion (Solid Roof)

A full solid-roof structure, typically with matching shingles or metal roofing. Provides complete rain and sun protection. Requires structural engineering for PA snow loads (Central PA: 25–30 psf ground snow load).

Pergola with Shade Sail or Canopy

A traditional open-rafter pergola fitted with a fabric canopy or shade sail system. More affordable than a solid roof, easily removed for winter, and available in dozens of colors.

Motorized Louvered Pergola

Premium adjustable-louvre systems (brands like StruXure, Sunesta) let you open and close the roof with a remote or app. Open for stargazing, close for rain. The highest-end option we offer.

Covered Deck Additions: Turning a Deck Into a Room

A solid-roof covered deck addition is structurally more involved than a pergola, but the result is a true outdoor room — one that functions in almost any weather.

Roofline Integration

Critical in Pennsylvania where snow loads matter. TrueCraft designs covered deck roofs that tie into your home's existing roofline or stand independently with appropriate pitch and drainage. Improper roofline connections are the #1 cause of covered deck water intrusion.

Drainage & Guttering

PA gets 40–44 inches of rain per year. Every covered deck needs properly designed gutters routed away from the home's foundation. We spec and install guttering as part of every covered roof project.

Electrical Rough-In

A covered deck without lighting and outlets is a missed opportunity. We rough-in electrical during the build for ceiling fans, recessed lighting, outdoor-rated outlets, and speaker systems.

Screening & Privacy

The final step for many homeowners is adding screen panels or privacy walls to convert the covered deck into a true 3-season room. We install retractable screen systems and fixed privacy panels.

Pergola Materials for Central PA

The right material depends on your maintenance tolerance, budget, and aesthetic goals. Here's how the options compare for PA's climate.

Permits for Pergolas & Covered Decks in PA

In Pennsylvania, any structure attached to your home requires a building permit — that includes all attached pergolas and covered decks. Freestanding pergolas over 200 square feet typically require permits in most Central PA municipalities as well.

Covered decks with solid roofs may require a structural engineer's stamp in some counties, particularly for large spans or heavy snow load conditions. Cumberland, Dauphin, York, and Lancaster counties each have their own requirements. TrueCraft handles all permit applications, drawings, and inspections on your behalf — you don't need to navigate the township offices yourself.
